Old Highway 54 Bridge

9:00am

The Callaway County Commission met with Paul Winkelmann, County Road & Bridge Engineer; Dustin Berry, SKW Engineers; and Doug Mertens, Mertens Construction, to discuss the Old Highway 54 Bridge near the Auxvasse Quarry. Deborah Goldman was also present for this meeting to represent the County Clerk’s office.

Commissioner Jungermann began by explaining that MoDOT currently has a cost sharing plan that pays up to 50% of costs for selected projects. The bridge over Old Highway 54 near the Auxvasse Quarry is in need of repair. Mr. Berry stated that the 2013 MoDOT inspection report for this bridge cited deterioration and the 2015 MoDOT inspection report found further deterioration. The bridge is currently on MoDOT’s deficient bridge list.

The group then discussed the repairs that this bridge needs. Mr. Winkelmann went through a list of estimated costs for various materials; a rough estimate of total costs for the overall repairs is $125,000. Mr. Mertens stated that Mertens Construction is willing to help the County with costs to repair this bridge, as it is necessary for business at the Auxvasse Quarry.

The deadline to submit applications to MoDOT for the cost sharing plan is in approximately one month. Commissioner Jungermann stated that he would like for the application to be completed and submitted by July 15. Mr. Winkelmann will work on getting more exact costs for the project, while Mr. Berry will work on calculating the engineering fees for the project. The group will stay in communication and work together to get the application completed. If the County’s application is accepted by MoDOT, the project will then go out for bid.
